Lucy Rose – Genteel Folk-Like Singer
Fri, Jan 22 2010
Written by:Roisin Kiernan
Gigging solo for the last year has gained the pastel-perfect Miss Rose a serious following. She's gained attention from Jack Steadman, from Bombay Bicycle Club – who's already remixed one of her songs – as well as Ben Lovett from Mumford & Sons who promoted her in his Communion club night. And now, with a newly attached band, she's gaining even more ground. Her vocal notes are reminiscent of Kate Nash and Florence Welch, and the rhythms like Mumford with an electric guitar. This is definitely a sweet and effortless talent to watch.
Who are you and where are you from?
“I’m Lucy Rose, 20 years old, originally from a little town called Rowington in the countryside of Warwickshire where I grew up. I moved to London after school to do music and have been living here nearly three years.”
What have you done?
“Many things that aren’t related to music, but on the music front I’m still working on this. First year at London, pretty much gigging every night, picking up my guitar and making the journey to unknown venues all around London to play songs to barmen and promoters. But the work has paid off, as more people are coming along to gigs and it’s not so lonely anymore. Especially as I’m now lucky enough to be playing with a band.
“I’ve been singing with various friends, such as Jack Steadman from Bombay Bicycle Club and Andy Burrows from Razorlight, and trying out different musical routes and feel like I’ve finally found the musical path I’d like to take.”
What inspires you?
“Boredom and loneliness normally gets the best out of me and inspires me. Thinking... maybe I over think, think about things way too much, but it seems to help my music but not sure if it helps me.
“Music that inspires me are the songs that remind me of certain points in my life and feelings that I had at that time. This motivates me to write songs that people can relate to and lose themselves in.”
What makes you stand out?
“Being ginger doesn’t seem to work anymore, so maybe it’s my Coventry City scarf, or how scruffy I seem to be. I hope the music that the band and I have made together can make us stand out. We’ve had a lot of fun making our sound and trying to push the boundaries by creating unusual parts and making them work together.
“I’d also like to think the songs make us stand out. I can only write songs about things that have really effected me. Hopefully people can recognise this in my lyrics and songwriting.”
Where are you going?
“Anywhere that my music takes me to. Massive success isn’t my aim, just being able to do this as a living and having enough fans to do small tours would be amazing. Writing and playing music for the rest of my life is the plan.”
