Kidkanevil – Post Hip Hop-Like Shizzle
Fri, Jan 22 2010
Written by:Roisin Kiernan
With nods to Aphex Twin's electronica, Flying Lotus' so-called “post hip hop” (a growing sound in LA) as well as the darker, more experimental sounds of dubstep, Kidkanevil's style is in a world of its own. At once melancholic, euphoric and thought-provoking, it's still got those beefy beats that make your head bop. This is a guy that should be huge just check out his recent, third, album 'Basho Basho'.
Who are you and where are you from?
“Kidkanevil aka kidyuki aka dr lao. I’m from up north.”
What have you done?
“That feels a bit incriminating, where are you going with this? I’ve mainly made beats and DJd and played mariokart. I’ve just done an album called 'Basho Basho'. I’m innocent.”
What inspires you?
“Cinema. Sega. Geek shit. Manga. Dim Sum. Snow. My studio space. Things that sound cool. The Natural History Museum. Tokyorkshire. My mates. Dilla, Timbaland, RZA, in that order. Arvo Part. Toru Takemitsu. When familiar things look different. Mixing cereals.”
What makes you stand out?
“Aside from my samurai hat? I dunno really. I try to maintain a personal and unique style to my beats. Actually I don’t try at all, that’s just how the shit comes out. I’m bad at standing out unfortunately, don’t really feel comfortable, I’m much better at hiding. Need to work on that.”
Where are you going?
“This is a very Freudian interview isn’t it? I’m going to new places. And some old places I still like. Pow!”
