If Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade

Album Review: Riva Starr

Album Review: Riva Starr

Rivmixx thinks it might just have found house music's future number one. Let us introduce you to the mad scientist of fun house music, Riva Starr - a guy who has experimented with a multitude of genres, creating a musical compound that is both innovative and unique. The album 'If Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade' could make us question what life has given to Stefano Miele (a.k.a Riva Starr) to allow him to produce such a contemporary collaboration - but we're happy all the same without.

The opening tune seeps a gypsy folk/cabaret music beat that you can imagine creeping out of a circus tent. Energetically transporting a childlike momentum, which emphasises the free musical spirit permeating the album. 'I Was Drunk' is a fantastic start. 'China Gum' reverberates in completely different territory, exercising a contrast of bass blips, scratches and echoes, which distance themselves from the candid and more illicit complexity. It's almost like you've jumped into a computer game and a mass of lasers are stabbing at the ear drums. As Rivmixx delves deeper the tunes become subterranean, drowning in sounds that have been heard before but distinctly carry an unmatched element. 'Once Upon A Time' takes a more chilled tone, still secreting an innocent childlike beat, where 'In Naples' introduces world music using a series of drum beats and rumba-esque hums. The final track carries a much more customary house beat, which takes Rivmixx back to the roots of true fun house music.

'If Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade' is a production of sounds that diverge so far from ordinary house music the scene is left with a new gloss. Riva Starr has coalesced a quantity of genres which allow combustion of sounds to mutate into a new form. Within these twelve tracks bass holds hands with folk, and everything from world music and routine atmospheric melodies join forces. This is an inspiring album that reminds Rivmixx of how fun house music can really be when habitual minimalist music evolves into something curiously invigorating.
